Reigning champion De La Salle University finally overcame University of the Philippines (UP) in the 79th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament.
The Lady Spikers turned the tables.
They bounced back big time and dealt UP its fifth loss by posting a convincing straight-set victory; 27-25, 25-11, 25-17.
La Salle played a monster game.
Majoy Baron caught fire and delivered 16 points off seven attacks, three blocks, and six service aces while Kianna Dy, Tin Tiamzon, and Des Cheng tallied 11 markers apiece.
Last season’s most promising rookie Isa Molde and Tots Carlos, on the other hand, were the lone bright spots for the Lady Maroons.
La Salle assistant coach Noel Orcullo said the Lady Spikers were just simply focused on bringing down their foes.
He admitted that they got distracted with UP’s aggressiveness and the way they celebrated in the first round.
“Tapos ‘yung ginagawa ng UP na ikot-ikot na distract sila sa ginagawa ng UP na parang na out of focus kaya sabi namin ‘wag niyong intindihin ‘yun talagang ‘yun ang psywar nila sa atin so ‘wag niyo lang pansinin.”
The Lady Spikers finally resolved it.
So when UP tried to mount a rally in the first set, La Salle coaches reminded the Lady Spikers to follow their game plan.
In the end, the reigning champions conquered the Lady Maroons and made a statement win.
And it all happened when they solved the mystery branded as “UP Ikot.”
