The battle of bronze medalists
2015 CEV DenizBank Champions League bronze medalist Vakifbank Istanbul begin the phase hosting Swiss champion and 2015 FIVB Club World Championship bronze medalist Volero Zurich with Foluke Akinradewo and our columnist Natalie Hagglund in the squad. After sending home last year’s winner Eczacibasi VitrA Istanbul, the Turkish powerhouse stands in a strong position ahead of their match against Volero Zurich. The Swiss team started off the previous phase with a lost tie-breaker to Lokomotiv Baku, but made a comeback 3-1 at home court in the next game. Will the Swiss team be strong enough against a star-studded Vakifbank?
The second match will kick off on Thursday at 8:00pm local time. You can watch it live here.
To forget the last year’s disappointment
Neither of the teams managed to reach the 2015 CEV DenizBank Champions League Final Four and one of them will lose that chance again. Fenerbahce went through Play-Off 12 defeating Chemik Police without losing a set, while Dinamo Moscow lost only one in their duel against German Dresdner SC. With their bombers Kim Yeon-koung and Nataliia Obmochaeva on the opposite sides of the net, it will be down to their teammates to make a difference. Who will beat the result of the last year’s edition?
The second match, aired on Laola1.tv, is scheduled for Tuesday 5:00pm local time.
Is one phase further enough?
Both Dinamo Kazan and Nordmeccanica Piacenza already achieved bigger success than in 2015 CEV DenizBank Champions League. But will being one step away from Final Four be enough? For the Italians this will be a chance to play almost at home. For the Russians this will be a chance to come back to the finals to claim the crown won back in 2014 edition…
