Some may have raised their eyebrows when Sta. Lucia, a squad in desperate need of a steady libero, tapped the services of outside hitter Juliet Catinding and converted her into their defensive ace for the 2019 PSL Grand Prix.
But now, three games into the Lady Realtors’ campaign, the UE Lady Warrior is proving to be a genius pick for head coach Babes Castillo.
After three double-double performances, Catindig is now averaging an impressive 15.33 excellent digs per game and 12.33 excellent receptions per outing, which, for someone who is transitioning to a new role, is pretty impressive.
“Happy po ako pero at the same time may pressure. First time ko po ito na maglaro sa PSL Grand Prix. Siyempre po hindi madaling depensahan lalo na ‘yung mga import,” said the soft-spoken spiker. “Good thing na lang po is may suporta ako from my coaches and my teammates na i-boost nila ‘yung confidence ko.”
With two more years of eligibility in the UAAP for Catindig, one would wonder what she’s doing in the PSL while the rest of the Lady Warriors are slugging it out in the UAAP Season 81 Women’s Volleyball tournament.
Without flinching, she admitted it has something to do with her academic standing.
“‘Yung sa acads ko po may bagsak po. Medyo nawala po sa focus and nagkaroon lang din po ng konting issue internally kaya hindi na rin po naayos,” she shared.
Lucky for Catindig, she chanced upon Sta. Lucia’s announcements through their social media accounts regarding their open tryouts which eventually landed her a spot in the club team’s lineup.
“Nakita ko po kasi sa Twitter ng Sta. Lucia ‘yung post nila about the tryouts. Kaya po nagpaalam po ako sa coach namin sa UE kung pwede akong sumali and good thing is pinayagan naman po niya ako,” said Catindig.
“Naka-mindset po ako sa tryout pa lang na libero na talaga ako. Hindi ako umasa na mag spiker ako sa PSL,” she added.
But have fans seen the last of Catindig wearing the red and white for the Recto crew? Or will she be a solid option to replace the graduating Kath Arado for Season 82?
“After this year po babalik ako sa UE. Inaayos ko na po,” she clarified.
The Realtors currently have a 1-2 win-loss standing and they are set to battle Cignal HD Saturday 2PM at the Strike Gym in Bacoor.
