Is UST ready for one big growl?

After winning her first championship in the 2016 Philippine Superliga (PSL) Grand Prix, University of Santo Tomas (UST) star Sisi Rondina shifts her focus on the upcoming University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament on February.

The vastly improved Tigresses are dead serious in bringing back the glory after a seven-year drought.

But they know it would not be an easy task as every team also showed great developments in their respective pre-season buildups.

The last time UST won a crown was in Season 72 when Rhea Dimaculangan emerged with the Finals Most Valuable Player award while Aiza Maizo-Pontillas, Judy Caballejo, Maruja Banaticla, Maika Ortiz Angeli Tabaquero reigned supreme.

The powerhouse UST squad dethroned top-seed De La Salle University in a best-of-three finals showdown to earn its 14th UAAP crown.

This year, it’s a pretty similar story.

After successful campaigns in the V.League and University Games, the Tigresses are now marching with a loud growl as Ria Meneses, Chloe Cortez, Pam Lastimosa, Alex Cabanos, EJ Laure and Rondina have shown great improvement and solid chemistry.

Finally, they appear ripe to win the title.

No expectations

But Rondina doesn’t want to come up with any expectations.
It’s really hard to speak when it’s about expectations. But one thing is for sure: We will give them a good fight. So we’re hoping for massive support and trust from the fans and the Thomasian community.
Rondina knows that winning the crown will not be a walk in the park, especially with Ateneo de Manila, Adamson, La Salle, National University and even University of the East coming up with great preparations.

And one way to do it is if they can effectively apply all skills that they learned in the PSL, V.League and Unigames where they won the gold medal.
I feel so happy and blessed that we gather lessons and skills from the leagues that we participated in. And all of those things will be very helpful if we can all apply it in the UAAP.
Yes, pre-season tourneys are not the real battles.

The war is in the UAAP.

That’s the stage where Rondina and the Tigresses are tipped to unleash one big growl.
