Road to Rio – NORCECA men

Hosts Brazil, FIVB Men’s World Cup winners Team USA and runners-up Italy are the only teams who have qualified for next year’s Olympics in Rio.

Road to Rio – European men – Road to Rio – Asia men – Road to Rio – South America men

That leaves the rest of the world’s volleyball nations to fight for the remaining nine spots in the 12-team tournament.

So what does YOUR team need to do to check-in at Rio next year?

Let’s have a look at the road ahead for the teams from NORCECA.

Unlike in Europe where the 2015 EuroVolley results have little bearing on qualification, the NORCECA Men’s Continental Championship results will have a direct influence on the Continental Qualification tournament roster.

That’s because the best four teams of the first competition in October will then compete for the Olympic berth in January.

Team USA will not play the NORCECA Championship this year since their spot in Rio has been already secured after winning the FIVB Men’s World Cup.

Canada, Honduras, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Costa Rica, Mexico and Trinidad & Tobago are the teams that will contest the NORCECA Championship in October.

The main favourites are the Canadians, who played at the World Cup as the second team from the NORCECA zone.

Looking at the NORCECA ranking it is very likely that Cuba, Puerto Rico and Mexico will join Canada at January’s Olympic Qualification Tournament in Rio.

The winner gets the automatic qualification while the runner-up wins a spot in the World Olympic Qualification Tournament played in Japan in May and June 2016 – the third team will progress to the Men’s Intercontinental Olympic Qualification Tournament.
