Olympic Volleyball has been part of the Summer Games since 1964 with Tokyo 2020 the 15th appearance of the sport. 12 men’s and 12 women’s teams will qualify for the Tokyo Olympics in a bid to win volleyball gold.

Men’s Olympic Volleyball

Brazil, United States, and the former Soviet Union, are the only teams to win multiple gold medals at the men’s volleyball tournament. The remaining five editions of the Men’s Olympic Volleyball Tournament were won by Japan, Poland, Netherlands, Russia and the defunct Yugoslavia.

Women’s Olympic Volleyball

Gold medals are less evenly distributed in women’s volleyball; the fourteen editions of the Women’s Olympic Volleyball Tournament were won by only five different countries: Brazil, Cuba, China, Japan and the former Soviet Union.
